Welcome to Blue Moon Akita Rescue

Dillon
Westwind's Gunsmoke "Dillon"

Thank you for "dropping in" to visit our new website.  Please bear with us while we are "under construction" and learning how to set up and maintain this website...and please check back periodically as we continue to expand the site and new orphans join our Adoptable Akitas page.

Our family has been owned, protected and loved by Akitas continuously since 1972 and during that time have had the pleasure of knowing, loving, living with, training, showing and doing rescue work with these wonderful dogs. Please visit the "Our Story" page to see how and why we have become so dedicated to Akita rescue.

Why a breed specific rescue for Akitas?  Akitas are large, strong, highly intelligent, independent and loyal dogs.  Quick learners, they are loyal to their family and typically do not do well in a shelter situation.  We believe breed-specific rescues are better for Akitas because they are not the right dog for everyone.  Many Akitas end up in rescue because their people got the dog before they learned about the breed.  Reputable Akita rescue organizations work hard to match the right dog with the right individual or family.  Left in a shelter, it's almost as if the Akita is embarassed to have been abandoned by those to whom they gave their loyalty and trust; they naturally aloof with strangers, which makes it difficult for them to "show well" in the shelter situation.  Many shelter Akitas become depressed, frequently will not eat.

Learn About the Akita.  Are you the perfect family for one of our current Akita orphans?  Please take some time to learn about the breed and certainly we would love to answer any questions you may have.  Akita Rescue Western New York (ARWNY) has some wonderful breed specific information on their site at http://akitarescuewny.com/ARWNY/information.htm

As rescues go, Blue Moon is small, but that works in our favor as we provide our orphans with a homelike atmosphere and individual attention.  In the last two years we have successfully placed over twenty Akitas into loving family homes.  Here at Blue Moon Akita Rescue we keep our Akita orphans until they find their forever homes.  Some are adopted quickly while others take a while. Regardless of the time spent here each and every dog gets filled with love, good food, medical care and lots of attention.  While these special dogs are with us, we ensure they have a safe, comfortable place to live, good exercise, fun toys, lots of love, good veterinary care, and some obedience training.   We spend quality time getting to know each Akita so we can pair him/her up with the perfect individual or family.

Please do look at our adoptable dogs and if by some chance you don't find someone you'd like to get to know better, we are happy to assist you in networking with other reputable Akita rescues to find the right Akita for your situation.

All Blue Moon Akitas have been spayed or neutered, microchipped and are current on vaccinations prior to placement.  Each dog is crate trained prior to placement.  Any individual interested in adopting one of our Akitas is asked to complete an adoption application and the adoption process includes a home visit. a conversation with your veterinarian and a reference check.  There is an adoption fee for each dog, which varies according to the dog's age, degree of training and any special needs.  The adoption contract helps to ensure that your Akita will always be taken care of and loved.

We network with other Akita rescues across the United States in an effort to match individuals with the best dog to meet their family's activity level and needs.

We would love to show off our friends to you.  So please take the time to get to know them online and then give us an email or call and schedule an interview.

Thank you so much for considering adopting one of these wonderful dogs.  I know they want to interview you.

December's Akita Orphan of the Month

Sully's Saga Continues ...

Sully waits
Sully waits for Santa

12/29/08 -- Sully continues to eat well and appears to be feeling much better.  He has an appointment for the next round of Heartworm treatment with the vet in Iowa on January 12.  Estimate after that it will be perhaps about a month before he is cleared to travel to Denver.  Say a little prayer for Josie as well as she remains very fearful of people, which will kind of complicate her transport (but fortunately the CARE people who will be handling Sully and Josie's transport are prepared for her).  She and Sully will crate up side by side and we'll make it a point for him to be out of the crate and on lead at her crate when she has to come out.  Once they arrive here, we'll work on making friends with her and earning her trust.  It's so sad for such a young dog to be so deeply frightened of people -- you wonder what happened to make her that way and then think perhaps it's better not to know.  Bless their hearts, I'm so glad Josie found Sully to take care of her.

12/28/08 -- Many many thanks for those of you who have written and called inquiring about how Sully is doing.  It looks as though all of our thoughts and prayers are working because Sully began eating again last week in time to watch for Santa and have a nice Christmas dinner.  We are hoping this means he's turned a corner in his heartworm treatment and that he's not going to have such a rough road going forward.  Of course little Josie continues to "stand by her man" and doesn't willingly spend much time away from Sully's side.

Sometime after the New Year's holiday, we'll be talking to the vet to see when she thinks the happy couple can ride off into the sunset (head West to Colorado) to look for their own forever home.  You can read the story of Sully and Josie by clicking on "Adoptable Akitas" and scrolling down.

In the meantime, I'll update this textbox as I get progress reports on the big guy's condition ... It seems I've apparently hit the wall in figuring out how to add or update news items to the web site, and haven't even been able to find where I first wrote about Sully!  Hopefully one day soon it will make sense but in the meantime, watch this box for updates of Sully.  karena
